This is the Prequal to Frightful's Side of the Mountain. Sam decides to run away into the woods. He figures that he could train a falcon to hunt for food for him. Sam climbed up a cliff to take a baby falcon. Later he called it Frightful and trained it to hunt for him. They became friends. Later the law forced him to give up Frightful, leaving her to fend for herself in the next book.
